A Deep Inhale: Getting to know the Resuscitation Academy

Have you heard of the Resuscitation Academy?

It’s a cornerstone of education, support and training for being prepared to respond to a person in sudden cardiac arrest.

Let’s learn more about this great organization that’s saving lives.

Dedicated to minimizing cardiac arrest fatalities, the Resuscitation Academy provides comprehensive training programs at all levels for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

There’s certainly need for the academy. About 356,000 Americans suffer a cardiac arrest each year, and only about 10 percent survive. By training and coaching broad groups of people in emergency response, the Resuscitation Academy is a critical tool for improved survival rates. The academy recognizes that survival varies widely and places a special focus on improving rates by region.

Several programs to choose from

The Resuscitation Academy offers several ways to get involved, including workshops.

Leadership

Intended for 911 center directors, emergency medical systems (EMS) directors, and training officers, the workshop covers:

·       Establishing a cardiac arrest registry

·       CPR and AED training

·       AED use for first responders

·       Best practices for rapid dispatch

High performance CPR

·       Includes the science behind high-performance CPR

·        Key metrics (rate, depth, recoil, ventilation, and chest compression fraction), and how to perform high performance CPR during a resuscitation call.

Self-assessment

“Chain of Survival” improvement is core to this program, providing tools and services for communities and regional emergency medical programs to examine and improve their reaction and response to cardiac events.

Keeping members connected

The Resuscitation Academy works to connect members – at any level of involvement or function -- through the Resuscitation Academy Network (RA Network). Via a virtual community, members can network, access free tools and resources needed to host RA workshops and share ideas for local and nationwide purposes. The RA Network provides publications and toolkits to support its goal of providing information to all participants.
